SUMMARY:Behold\, I Make All Things New: Beauty\, Brokenness\, and the Call to Beloved Community
DESCRIPTION:\n\t \n\n\n\n\tMuch has been written about the “new” Detroit as a place of rebirth and resurrection\, but this narrative leaves out the reality of massive water shutoffs and home foreclosures\, the violence of gentrification and displacement\, and an ugly legacy of racism. At the same time\, something new\, grounded in resistance and the call to “wage love\,” is taking root. Can we grow our hearts big enough to hold the brokenness and the beauty of the present moment? Can we dive deeply enough to discover the spiritual tools of transformation needed in these troubling times? \n\n\n\n\t \n\n\n\n\tKim Redigan is Vice Chair of the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights and represents MCHR as a member of the Detroit People’s Water Board Coalition Faith Action Committee. A nonviolence trainer and peace educator with Michigan-Meta Peace Team\, Kim has served on several domestic and international peace teams\, including teams in Palestine and Egypt. She is also involved in Women in Black – Detroit\, Detroit Metro Interfaith Worker Justice\, the Detroit Area Peace with Justice Network\, and is on the state council of Pax Christi Michigan. In 2011\, Kim walked from Detroit to Lansing as part of a campaign called Moveable Peace\, and in 2015\, she walked from Detroit to Flint as part of the People's Water Board Water Justice Journey. Kim has a Master’s degree in Religious Studies from the University of Detroit Mercy\, a Master of Arts in Social Justice from Marygrove College\, and a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan-Dearborn. For the past thirteen years\, she has been part of the theology faculty at University of Detroit Jesuit High School where she teaches World Religions\, Catholic Social Teaching\, Wealth and Poverty and moderates the school’s JustPeace club. She is one of the Homrich 9\, a group of nonviolent water activists and people of faith who blocked contractors from shutting off water on Detroit residents in the summer of 2014 and the lyricist for Flowtown Revue\, a group of Detroit water activists who advocate through song. In her spare time\, Kim writes for a variety of publications and blogs on activism and spirituality at www.writetimeforpeace.com. \n\n\n\n\t \n\n
