Keep Growing Detroit – Action

Keep Growing Detroit aims to create food sovereignty in Detroit through urban agriculture programs, including Grown in Detroit, a network of family and youth community gardens throughout Detroit; the Garden Resource Program, which provides participants with garden resources such as  garden tools-on-loan, seeds, and Detroit-grown transplants; and the 1.75 acres Plum Street Market Garden, which models appropriately scaled, production-focused urban agriculture, trains urban growers and volunteers, and offers hands-on educational sessions.

Sonali Devarajan is the Community Education Coordinator at Keep Growing Detroit. As a Washington DC native she has worked for both the EPA and the House of Representatives’ Committee on Energy and Commerce. She graduated from University of Michigan with degrees in Economics and Environmental Science. She falls more in love every day with the urban gardening movement and amazing people in Detroit where she can now be found living, working and playing.  She is also an active member of the Global Shapers’ Detroit hub.

W. Michael Slattery grew up on a farm in southeast Iowa, and earlier in his career, worked 18 years in finance and international business in New York and Tokyo.  In 1999, Michael returned to his farming roots and he and his wife, Nancy, raised their three children on their 220-acre family owned- farm and rented land near Maribel, WI. Presently Michael and Nancy raise Holstein steers and cash crop, in addition to selling produce at farmers' markets.

Distressed at the continued worsening of farm economics in which wealth from farms is transferred to agribusiness and subsidizes U.S. consumers, he seeks to provide value-added service to invigorate WFU (Wisconsin Farmers’ Union) in its support of farming and to bring about structural changes for revitalizing agriculture

Slattery holds a doctorate degree in Economic and Political Development and Theory from Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy in Medford, Mass.
